01 · The quarry

Travertine from our own quarry.

We quarry it, saw it and ship it in three shades: light, beige and dark.

02 · The face

The vein is in plain sight, layer upon layer.

We cut the face with a chain saw cutter and square each block with diamond wire.

03 · The slab

As blocks or slabs, vein cut or cross cut.

01 · The quarry

This is where the stone comes from.

Travertine forms in layers over thousands of years. We cut it at the quarry face, square it into numbered blocks and saw it into slabs at our plant.

Because we run the extraction ourselves, we can show you the block before cutting it and match slabs from the same face for a large project.

03 · Shades

Three shades, depending on the bench it comes from.

The color of travertine changes with each layer of the quarry. We sort it into three shades. Wet the stone to see how it looks polished.

Dry halfWet half

Why wet it

When wet, the stone shows the color it will have once polished.

Dry, the sawn surface looks whitish from the cutting dust. Water brings out the background color and the vein, just like after polishing. That is why at the quarry every block is wetted before it is shown.

Two ways to cut

Vein cut or cross cut.

Vein cut: the cut goes across the layers, and the slab shows long parallel lines, like in the photos on this page.

Diagram, not to scale. The cross cut is also known as fleuri cut.

Finishes

Done on the slab
NaNaturalStraight from the cut, unfilled. It is how we usually sell it.
FiFilledThe natural pores are filled.

07 · FAQ

Frequently asked questions.

What is the difference between light, beige and dark?

The background color and the vein. Each shade comes from a different bench of the quarry: light is ivory with a fine vein, beige is sand-colored with golden veins and dark is toasted brown with a chestnut vein. We also call beige intermediate (intermedio).

What do you sell: blocks, slabs or cut-to-size pieces?

All three. The whole block; the slab sawn on our multi-wire saw, vein cut or cross cut; and cut-to-size pieces trimmed on the bridge saw: 20 × 60 cm, 80 × 80 cm, or 30 and 40 cm wide in free lengths.

What size are the blocks?

They weigh between 10 and 12 tonnes. On average they are 2.40 to 2.60 m long, 1.00, 1.10 or 1.20 m deep and 1.00 to 1.40 m high.

What are vein cut and cross cut?

It is the direction of the cut. In a vein cut, the cut goes across the layers and the slab shows parallel lines. In a cross cut, the cut runs parallel to the layers and the slab shows a cloudy pattern. The vein cut is more delicate, because the stone can split along the vein.

What finishes do you offer?

We usually sell travertine natural, straight from the cut and unfilled. On slabs we also do filled, polished and honed finishes.

How do I ask for a sample or a price?
